A Look at the Pros and Cons of the Pancake Welding Hood

by Janice Knight

No matter which way you look at it, a welder has a job that can bring about some uncomfortable work settings that naturally come along with certain dangers due to the nature of the job. The welder's hood or helmet is perhaps one of the most important pieces of safety equipment, and there are so many different units to choose from. Here is a look at some of the pros and cons of the pancake welding hood

Pro: The welding hood can help deter glare when working in full sun.

One of the issues with the modern-day welding hood is the shape of the open back can cause issues with glare if you are working in full sunlight that is positioned behind you. This can make it harder to see the project you are working on when the hood is down over your face. The pancake welding hood is designed to deter this kind of issue with its unique shape.

Con: Pancake welding hoods can be a little heavier than carbon fiber helmets.

While you can find some pancake-style welding hoods that are created out of carbon fiber, the majority of them are made out of heavier materials. Therefore, the pancake hood can be slightly heavier than a regular carbon fiber hood. Many welders will use the pancake hood when they need to and switch to a carbon fiber hood for longer welding processes.

Pro: Pancake welding hoods offer a good amount of protection.

The surface area of a pancake welding hood is quite large in comparison to a traditional welding helmet. Therefore, one of the biggest advantages of these hoods is the fact that they can offer more protection from flying sparks and heat. For example, if you have a lot of issues with sparks hitting your back or shoulders, the larger surface face of the pancake hood can help deter these kinds of issues.

Con: The welding hood is not as customizable.

One of the big reasons welders like carbon fiber welding helmets is the fact that they can be customized with graphics and colors to suit their own individual personalities. While the pancake hood can be customized for a proper fit, the exterior of the hood may not always be as customizable when it comes to colors and graphics. Nevertheless, these hoods serve a valuable purpose and aesthetic appeal is not the most important aspect of a good hood for most welders.
