Exploring Different Types Of Petroleum Gas Equipment

by Janice Knight

Petroleum gas equipment plays a vital role in many industrial processes, from powering homes and businesses to supporting fuel production. For those involved in the energy industry, it's important to understand the different types of petroleum gas equipment available.

Here are a few of the most common types and how they can be used in your operations.

Compressors

Compressors are essential for transferring natural gas from one place to another. They compress the molecules within the gas, which makes it easier to transport them without losing pressure or density.

It's also important to note that there are two types of compressors, which include reciprocating and centrifugal compressors.

Reciprocating compressors use pistons connected to crankshafts to pump air through a cylinder chamber and reduce its volume. This compression process creates high pressure that can then be used as energy or stored until needed. Reciprocating piston compressors also provide steady flows of compressed gas at low levels since they operate at a constant speed.

Centrifugal gas compressors are another popular choice for petroleum gas applications due to their higher efficiency levels compared with reciprocating piston compressors. The compressor spins the impeller at high speeds, which creates an area of low pressure where the gases can be drawn in from the suction side.

Subsequently, these gases can be compressed on the discharge side, where they are pushed out with increased pressure and velocity.

Centrifugal compressors also work better for large-scale operations since they can handle different flow rates due to their efficient design, which could enable them to operate in remote locations.

Pumps and Valves

Pumps and valves regulate the flow of petroleum gas, ensuring that it is delivered at an even pressure throughout its journey. They are essential for controlling the flow rate, preventing fluctuations, and ensuring that the gas is delivered safely to its destination.

Pumps are devices with internal or external moving parts that use energy to move a specific liquid, gas, or other material through a pipeline or flow system. Depending on the type of pump, they could be powered by electricity, hydraulic energy, or even compressed air.

Valves allow operators to control the flow within their systems by restricting the amount of pressure allowed through pipes or flowlines. Manual valves require the operator to open and close them manually, while automated valves respond to a preset pressure range or electric signals from switches or gauges for better control over flow rates.

For pumps and valves to operate safely when transporting petroleum gases like natural gas and propane, there should be proper monitoring solutions in place as well. These monitoring solutions can include sensors that measure temperature, flow rate, and pressure levels which enable operators to maintain safe operation throughout their entire system.

Without these monitoring solutions in place, it would be much more difficult to ensure safety during transport, making them an essential part of any petroleum gas operation.
